The first round of the 2024 NHL playoffs will now start on Saturday, April 20, two days earlier than originally scheduled. The league announced the change on Monday, citing operational reasons for the decision.
Originally, the playoffs were set to begin on Monday, April 22. However, the league has decided to move the start date up two days to avoid potential scheduling conflicts with the NBA playoffs. The NBA playoffs are scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 27, and the league wanted to avoid any overlap with the NHL playoffs.
The change in the start date will not affect the format of the playoffs. The first two rounds of the playoffs will still be best-of-seven series, with the third round and Stanley Cup Final being best-of-five series. The playoffs are scheduled to conclude no later than June 30.
The 16 teams that will qualify for the playoffs are still to be determined. However, several teams have already clinched playoff berths, including the Boston Bruins, the Colorado Avalanche, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The remaining teams will be decided in the final week of the regular season.
