Cyprus: A Geographic Overview

Location and Geography

Cyprus is an island located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, just south of Turkey. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily and Sardinia.

Division and Borders

Cyprus has been divided into two parts since 1974: the Republic of Cyprus, which controls the southern two-thirds of the island, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which occupies the northern third. The two parts are separated by a buffer zone controlled by the United Nations.

Cyprus has a diverse geography, with mountains, plains, forests, and coastline. The highest point on the island is Mount Olympus, which is 1,952 meters (6,404 feet) high.
