Early Life and Education
Francisco Pereira Moura Balsemão was born on September 1, 1937, in Lisbon, Portugal. He attended the University of Lisbon, where he earned a law degree. After completing his studies, Balsemão worked as a lawyer for several years before entering the world of journalism.
Career in Journalism
In 1972, Balsemão founded the weekly news magazine "Expresso." The magazine quickly gained a reputation for its independent journalism and critical coverage of the government. Balsemão's leadership of "Expresso" helped to establish him as a leading figure in Portuguese journalism.
In 1975, Balsemão was elected to the Portuguese parliament as a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). "Público" quickly became one of the most popular newspapers in Portugal, and it remains a leading source of news and information today.
Political Career
In 1985, Balsemão was elected Prime Minister of Portugal. He served as Prime Minister for two terms, from 1985 to 1995. During his time as Prime Minister, Balsemão oversaw Portugal's entry into the European Union and implemented a number of economic reforms.
Return to Journalism
After leaving office in 1995, Balsemão returned to journalism. He continued to write and edit for "Público" and served as the newspaper's chairman. Balsemão also founded the Portuguese Institute of Communications (ICP), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting freedom of speech and the development of journalism in Portugal.
