Early life and education

Francisco Balsemão Filho was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1937. His father, Francisco Balsemão, was a journalist and politician.

He studied law at the University of Lisbon and then worked as a lawyer before entering journalism.

Journalism career

Francisco Balsemão Filho began his journalism career as a reporter for the newspaper *Diário de Notícias* in 1959.

He later became editor of the paper and then its publisher.

In 1974, he founded the newspaper *Expresso*, which became one of the most influential newspapers in Portugal.

Political career

Francisco Balsemão Filho was elected to the Portuguese Parliament in 1976 as a member of the Socialist Party.

He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1978 to 1979 and then as Minister of Culture from 1979 to 1980.

He was also a member of the European Parliament from 1981 to 1984.

Later life and legacy

Francisco Balsemão Filho retired from journalism in 1998.

He died in Lisbon in 2014 at the age of 76.

He is remembered as one of the most influential journalists and politicians in Portuguese history.
